Spoilers ahead! A frank discussion about what went on in Westeros last night. Don’t read if you don’t want to know about MY DARLING’S HORRIBLE DEATH.
Joffrey. Sigh. My little psycho lover is dead. It’s not quite as shocking as Ned Stark – Joffrey’s had it coming for four seasons – and not quite as upsetting as Rob and Catelyn – it’s JOFFREY – and yet, it still just GUTTED ME. Why, Game of Thrones, why? I was really looking forward to Joffrey just descending into complete madness. I wanted the streets of King’s Landing to run red with the blood of its citizens. I wanted a Caligula-like rein of orgies and torture and beheadings on every street corner. I’m sick like that. And I was really looking forward to Margaery as queen, trying her damnest to stay one step ahead of her husband, so as to live another day.
So many story options. Gone now.
I remember thinking the same thing about RENLY’S death, for God’s sake. But Joffrey’s death REALLY forces the story to move in another direction. Sure, Tyrion will be blamed and that gives him lots of storyline. And now Sansa’s on the run too. Blah blah blah. And OBVIOUSLY it was the Red Viper who did it, so we get to know him a little better.
But no more of my pretty baby acting out. No more petulant tantrums. No more making everyone nervous with his rages and fits and outbursts. It’s too upsetting.
And who gets the throne now? Stannis? He’s the only Baratheon left. Besides Gendry, who’s a bastard. Obviously Daenerys has the best claim, but that’s still a few seasons away. I’m wondering if somehow it’s Bran. Wasn’t there talk of installing Ned in season one? And Bran is the oldest son now, I’m wondering if there will be some uprising that puts him on the throne. I don’t know. I don’t know.
Talk about starting the season off with a bang. No slow burn THIS YEAR, eh?
